Basic Knowledge of FR4

What is FR4?

FR4 or Flame Retardant 4 is a material that can self-extinguish after burning. The "4" in FR4 indicates its flame-retardant properties. This means it can resist combustion and slow down the spread of fire. It is composed of a woven fiberglass cloth impregnated with epoxy resin.

The fiberglass reinforcement strengthens it, and the epoxy resin provides electrical insulation. FR4 can withstand relatively high temperatures. These are the reasons why FR4 is commonly used for manufacturing circuit boards and other electronic components.

CNC machining of FR4 parts refers to the use of CNC machines for precision machining of FR4 materials to make parts of the required shape and size.FR4 materials have high mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, and good machinability, and can be used to manufacture a variety of electronic parts and circuit boards that require precise dimensions and high performance.

FR4 and G10 are glass fiber reinforced epoxy materials. The difference between G10 and FR4 is that FR4 is a flame retardant version of G10. The two grades have similar material properties, but FR4 has a higher flammability rating. In most cases, FR4 can be safely substituted when G10 is required; however, G10 should not be substituted when FR4 is required.
While FR4 is not inherently waterproof, it can be water-resistant through additional treatments or coatings. The epoxy resin in FR4 provides a degree of moisture resistance, but additional measures, such as sealing or laminating with water-resistant materials, may be necessary for applications requiring full waterproofing.
FR4 is known for its rigidity rather than flexibility. The composition of glass fibers and epoxy resin creates a sturdy and stable material, that's why it is less flexible than some other plastics.
