TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of PEI

What is PEI?

PEI, or Polyetherimide, belongs to the family of amorphous, high-performance polymers. It is a member of the polyimide family that can withstand continuous use at elevated temperatures, typically up to around 180°C (356°F). PEI monomer has the molecular formula C37H24O6N2 and a molecular weight of 592.61 g/mol.

PEI has excellent mechanical strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability. It maintains these properties even at high temperatures. It has good resistance to a wide range of chemicals, including many solvents and acids. Additionally, this material has excellent electrical insulation properties and is flame-resistant.

Advantages of PEI

  • High heat resistance
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Low smoke and toxicity
  • Dimensional stability
  • Good electrical properties

Applications of PEI

  • Aerospace brackets
  • Automotive lighting
  • Electrical connectors
  • Medical device housings
  • Food processing conveyor parts
  • Electronic device components
  • Industrial machinery components

FAQ

Machining PEI Buying FAQs

Polyetherimide (PEI) is moisture-resistant and has low water absorption properties. However, it's essential to note that while it resists water absorption, it may not be completely waterproof in all conditions.
Polyetherimide (PEI) is a sustainable material due to its recyclability and ability to withstand repeated sterilization.
Polyetherimide (PEI) is a rigid thermoplastic with high-temperature resistance, so it is not flexible like some other polymers.
PEI is not considered porous; it has a dense structure, providing good dimensional stability and resistance to moisture absorption.
