Non-Standard Fasteners Turned to Your Drawing

DEK makes the bolts, nuts, screws and studs catalogues do not stock: odd lengths, non-standard heads, left-hand or fine-pitch threads, cross-drilled shanks for safety wire, captive and shoulder designs, in stainless, titanium, A286, brass and alloy steel.

Parts are turned on Swiss-type lathes with threads to ISO 965 6g/6H or ASME B1.1 2A/3A. With no MOQ, 10 or 10,000 pieces get the same engineer-reviewed quote within 6 hours. Fasteners are part of our custom CNC machined parts catalogue.

Fastener Materials, Processes & Tolerances

Thread size, class, concentricity and finish are set by material choice and by how each feature is turned, tapped or milled.

  • Materials for Custom Fasteners

Grade is chosen for strength, temperature and corrosion in the joint.

    • Stainless 303 for free-machining bolts
    • A286 for hot aerospace joints
    • 4140 heat treated to class 12.9 equivalent

    Material Why it is used
Stainless 303 / 304 General bolts and nuts
Stainless 316 Marine and chemical fasteners
    Stainless A286 High-temp aerospace, to 35 HRC
Titanium grade 5 Light, strong: aerospace, racing
Alloy steel 4140 Class 8.8–12.9 equiv. after HT
    Brass C360 Electrical, non-sparking screws
    Inconel 718 Exhaust, turbine, downhole
  • How We Machine Custom Screws CNC

Head, shank, thread, recess and point are finished before cut-off, which keeps head and thread concentric.

Design Tips for Custom Fasteners

Five drawing decisions that set cost, fit and fatigue life of a custom bolt, screw or stud before it reaches the lathe.

  • Specify Thread Class

Give class, not just size. 6g is standard; 4g/6h or 3A/3B costs more and suits only gauging or vibration-critical joints.

  • Tolerance Shoulders Apart

On shoulder bolts, tolerance shoulder diameter (h6 or h8) and length separately from thread length; add an undercut at the transition.

  • Call Out Lockwire Holes

Add a lockwire hole callout with its diameter and its orientation relative to the drive recess.

  • Prevent Galling

Titanium or stainless fasteners in stainless tapped holes need a dry-film or anti-seize finish, or expect galling.

  • Design for Fatigue

For fatigue-loaded parts, ask for rolled threads and a fillet under the head of at least 0.1× nominal diameter.

What to Call Out on Your Drawing

  • Thread Size and Class

State thread size and class (ISO 965 6g/6H or ASME B1.1 2A/3A) so every thread is gauged go/no-go to the right limit.

  • Plating and Thread Fit

Say whether thread tolerance applies before or after plating: zinc adds 5–12 µm per flank and can close a tight class.

  • Material and Strength

Name the grade and target: 4140 to class 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 equivalent, A286 up to 35 HRC, titanium grade 5 as machined.

  • Quantity and Certificates

Give quantity and traceability needs; heat numbers come from spectrometer-verified bar, with FAI reports on request.

Applications & Industries

Custom bolts manufacturing for aerospace and defense assemblies in A286 and titanium, medical instrument screws, and hardware for electronics and test gear.

Why DEK for Custom Nuts Manufacturing

A catalogue fastener costs cents; a custom one is only worth it if the thread is right the first time.

  • Every Thread Gauged

Every thread is checked with go/no-go gauges to ISO 965 or ASME B1.1 class before the lot ships.

  • Concentricity at FAI

Head-to-shank concentricity of 0.02 mm is checked at first article inspection, not assumed.

  • Traceable Bar Stock

Material heat numbers are recorded from spectrometer-verified bar, so aerospace and medical customers can trace lots.

  • One Coordinated Job

Swiss turning, tapping, heat treatment and plating are coordinated in one job, from 10 prototypes to 10,000 pieces.

Custom Fasteners FAQ

MOQ, aerospace work and thread standards for custom bolts, nuts and screws.

Can you make fasteners in small quantities without an MOQ?
Yes. Custom bolts, nuts, screws and studs are Swiss-turned with no minimum order, so a 10-piece prototype set and a 10,000-piece production run are quoted and inspected the same way.
Do you make aerospace fasteners custom to drawing?
Yes. A286, titanium grade 5 and Inconel 718 fasteners are machined to your drawing under AS9100D, with material certificates, thread gauging and FAI reports supplied on request.
What thread standards can you produce on custom screws?
Metric ISO 965 coarse and fine (6g/6H standard, 4g/5H on request), UNC/UNF to ASME B1.1 class 2A/3A, and BSW/BSF on request, from M1.6 (#0-80) to M42 (1-1/2").
