Custom CNC Machining Services for Your Drawing

Custom machined parts are the brackets, shafts, housings, manifolds, pins, fixtures and knobs and handles a product or machine is built from. DEK machines them to your drawing in 50+ metals and plastics, from one piece to 10,000+, with no minimum order quantity.

This page covers the part itself: what we make, how a drawing becomes a delivered component and how to design it to machine cleanly. The processes behind it are on CNC machining services; gear machining and custom aluminum heat sinks have their own pages.

Why Buyers Move Their Custom Parts to DEK

2,300+ customers in North America, Europe and Australia have moved custom machining services to DEK for these reasons.

  • Tolerance Since 2002

Founded in 2002 making mold core pins and guide bushes, where ±0.005 mm is the starting requirement, not an upgrade.

  • Every Process In-House

Milling, turning, Swiss, EDM, grinding and finishing under one roof, so grinding and finishing are never sent out to other suppliers.

  • Scales Past 50 Pieces

The same drawing moves from one prototype to 10,000+ pieces; archived programs, fixtures and inspection plans keep repeat orders identical.

  • Audit-Ready Paperwork

ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485 and AS9100D (TÜV): inspection records already exist in the format medical and aerospace buyers ask for.

Engineer-Reviewed DFM Included

An engineer checks every drawing by hand for thin walls, deep pockets, unreachable internal corners and tolerances that need grinding. You get the DFM notes before the price, not after.

Part Families, Materials & Tolerances

What we machine, which materials fit each part, the tolerances we hold and how quantities scale from one piece to production.

  • CNC Machined Parts by Family

Each part family has its own recurring tolerances, materials and failure modes; dedicated pages cover each in detail.

Custom Machined Parts vs. Single-Process Sourcing

A custom part is routed to whichever processes its features need, in one order. EDM handles hardened or sharp-cornered features.

Design Tips for Custom Machined Parts

Small changes at the drawing stage remove most of the cost and risk; our engineers raise each one in the DFM review.

  • Internal Corner Radii

Specify a radius of at least one third of pocket depth (R10 or larger at 30 mm deep). Sharp internal corners require EDM.

  • Wall Thickness

Keep metal walls at 0.8 mm or thicker and plastic walls at 1.5 mm or thicker; thinner walls deflect and lose tolerance.

  • Thread Depth

Tapped depth beyond 2.5× nominal diameter adds cost, not strength; call out the minimum full-thread depth.

  • Tolerance Where It Matters

Put ±0.005 mm on mating features and let ISO 2768-m cover the rest; blanket tolerance raises quotes.

  • Standard Hole Sizes

    Use drill and reamer diameters (Ø3 H7, Ø6 H7, Ø8 H7) rather than Ø6.2 or Ø7.9, plus standard threads.

  • Feature Access

Design features to be reached from as few directions as possible; each extra setup adds time and a tolerance stack.

Feature Risks We Flag in DFM

  • Text and Marking

Engraved text under 0.5 mm stroke width is slow to cut; laser marking is faster and clearer for part IDs.

  • Cross-Drilled Ports

Manifold ports in 6061, 316 or brass need deburred intersections and a leak test, both planned in the quote.

  • Hardened Mold Details

Mold components in H13, S7, D2 and 420 need hardness, EDM detail and ground fits; heat treatment comes first.

  • Shaft Runout

Shafts in 1045, 4140, 17-4 PH and 316 depend on runout and keyways; bearing seats go to grinding.

How to Order Custom Machined Parts

  • 1

    Send the Drawing

PDF, STEP, STP, IGES or SLDPRT with material, tolerance and finish; a 3D model alone is enough.

  • 2

    Manual DFM Review

An engineer flags thin walls, deep pockets, sharp internal corners and tolerances needing grinding.

  • 3

    Quote in 6 Hours

Most parts priced the same working day; very complex assemblies take up to 3 days.

  • 4

    Machining

Routed to 3-, 4- or 5-axis milling, CNC or Swiss turning, EDM or grinding as the part needs.

  • 5

    Inspection & Shipping

CMM first article, outgoing inspection with photos, then 3–7 days worldwide by DHL, FedEx or UPS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Files, order quantities, lead times and tolerances for custom parts.

What file formats do I need to order custom machined parts?
A 2D PDF drawing plus a 3D STEP, STP, IGES or SLDPRT model is ideal, because the drawing carries tolerances and finishes the model does not. A 3D model alone is enough to start a quote; our engineers confirm tolerances and material with you during the review.
Is there a minimum order for custom CNC parts?
No. DEK machines from one piece to 10,000+ with no MOQ. A single prototype and a production batch go through the same DFM review, machining and inspection process.
How long does a custom CNC machining service take?
Simple prototypes ship in as little as 1 day, typical prototypes in 3–5 days and small batches in 4–7 days. Shipping adds 3–7 days by courier. Parts needing heat treatment, grinding or plating take longer, and the quote states the exact lead time.
What tolerance do custom CNC machined parts hold?
±0.005 mm on machined metal parts and ±0.01 mm on plastics as standard. Ground features reach ±0.002 mm and small Swiss-turned features ±0.003 mm on request. Every first article is verified on a CMM against the drawing.
