introduction

Aluminum 6082 in CNC Machining

Aluminum-metal

Aluminum 6082 is known for being highly resistant to corrosion and possessing exceptional strength, the highest among the 6000 series alloys.

It is a popular choice for applications under stress. Despite being a relatively new alloy, it can often replace 6061 in various uses. It is frequently used for machining, even though it can be challenging to create thin walls with it. When machining this alloy, use sharp carbide tools at higher cutting speeds, adjusting as needed for optimal efficiency and tool life. Use appropriate coolants or lubricants to manage heat generated during machining. Adequate fixturing and workholding prevent vibrations and ensure precise cuts. Manage chip control to prevent entanglement and tool breakage.

Aluminum 6082 can achieve good surface finishes and tailor cutting strategies to meet specific requirements. For post-machining, consider additional processes such as anodizing or coating as needed.  Aluminium 6082 is composed of various elements in specific weight percentages. The primary component is aluminum, constituting 95.2% to 98.3% of the alloy. Other elements include chromium, limited to a maximum of 0.25%, copper at a maximum of 0.1%, iron at a maximum of 0.5%, magnesium ranging from 0.6% to 1.2%, manganese between 0.4% and 1.0%, silicon ranging from 0.7% to 1.3%, titanium limited to a maximum of 0.1%, zinc restricted to a maximum of 0.2%, and residuals kept at a maximum of 0.15%.

TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Basic Knowledge of Aluminum 6082

What is Aluminum 6082?

6082 aluminum alloy belongs to the 6xxx series of wrought aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloys. It is a popular choice within its series, alongside alloys 6005, 6061, and 6063. Although not prominently featured in ASTM (North American) standards, it is commonly used in extrusion and rolling processes.

This alloy is not suitable for casting but can be forged and clad, though this practice is not widespread. Unlike some alloys, it cannot undergo work hardening. However, it is frequently heat-treated to achieve tempers with increased strength at the expense of reduced ductility. Some alternative names for this alloy include AlSi1MgMn, 3.2315, H30, and A96082.

Advantages of Aluminum 6082

  • Good machinability for easy cutting, milling, and drilling
  • Balanced strength and toughness for structural applications
  • Weldability for fabricating complex structures
  • Excellent corrosion resistance, suitable for outdoor and marine environments
  • Heat-treatable to enhance mechanical properties
  • Versatility across industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, and marine
  • Anodizing response for protective coatings and decorative finishes

Applications of Aluminum 6082

  • Automotive: Chassis parts, brackets
  • Aerospace: Fuselage sections, wing structures
  • Marine: Boat hulls, masts
  • Construction: Extruded profiles for structural support
  • Machined Parts: Fittings, connectors
  • Electronics: Enclosures, components
  • Oil and Gas: Offshore platform components
  • Machinery: Automated machinery parts

FAQ

Machining Aluminum 6082 Buying FAQs

Alloy 6082 is a strong and corrosion-resistant material, surpassing Alloy 6061 in strength within the 6000 series. As a result, Alloy 6082 has replaced Alloy 6061 in various applications. Aluminum 6082 is equivalent to the following standards: AA6082 (in the United States) EN AW-6082 (in Europe)
Both aluminum alloys generally have good strength properties, but the specific strength can depend on the temper (heat treatment) applied. Typically, 6082 is considered to have slightly higher mechanical properties than 6061, making it potentially stronger. 6082 has a higher tensile strength (290 MPa) compared to 6061 (275 MPa).
Yes, 6082 aluminum can be bent. However, the ease of bending depends on the temper of the aluminum. Generally, softer tempers are easier to bend, while harder tempers may require more specialized equipment or processes. The top aluminum alloys for bending are in the 3xxx and 5xxx series and sometimes the 6xxx series. Alloy 6063 is a good option, but 6082 is more challenging. Avoid alloys in the 2xxx family as they are too strong and harder to form.
The main distinction is in their chemical composition. The 6082 belongs to the 6000 series, which contains magnesium and silicon. On the other hand, the 7075 is part of the 7000 series, characterized by zinc and magnesium, with a higher copper content in the case of 7075. 7075 aluminum is strong with a high strength-to-weight ratio. 6082 aluminum offers good strength and corrosion resistance, making it versatile for general purposes, and is easier to weld than 7075.
