introduction
Tool Steel D2 in CNC Machining
Tool steel D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium, air-hardening steel with excellent wear resistance, high compressive strength, and good toughness.
It's commonly used to manufacture cutting tools, dies, punches, and other high-strength components. When machining tool steel D2, we choose carbide tools specifically designed for cutting hardened steel. We ensure proper cooling with suitable coolant or lubricant to dissipate heat during machining and to improve tool life. We adjust cutting speeds and feeds to find the right balance between material removal rates and tool life.
For superior results, we consider secondary processes like grinding or EDM to achieve tight tolerances and excellent surface finishes. If post-machining heat treatment is needed, we plan for potential dimensional changes during the process. D2’s hardness ranges from 55-62 HRC when heat treated, and it is easy to machine in the annealed condition. When hardened correctly, D2 has only minimal distortion. The high chromium content in D2 steel provides mild corrosion resistance when in a hardened state.

TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
Basic Knowledge of Tool Steel D2
What is Tool Steel D2?
Tool Steel D2, called D2 steel, is part of the cold-work tool steels category primarily used to produce cutting tools and dies. Its composition typically includes carbon, chromium, molybdenum, and optional elements like vanadium. D2 steel retains a sharp cutting edge for extended periods because of its exceptional wear resistance and hardness.
Its air-hardening property means it achieves hardness through air cooling, eliminating the need for oil or water quenching during heat treatment. While D2 steel excels in wear resistance, it requires proper maintenance to prevent corrosion, and its toughness may be lower compared to some alternatives.

Other Materials
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is durable, corrosion-resistant, and visually appealing. It's widely used because of its strength, low maintenance, and ability to withstand various temperatures and chemicals.
Mild Steel
Forging, welding, and machining mild steel are some of DEK’s expertise. Because of mild steel’s high malleability and ductility, it can be easily formed, bent, and stretched without breaking.
Alloy Steel
Powerful than carbon steel, more wear-resistant, more tear-resistant. Alloy steel is durable and can withstand high-temperature environments.
