Why Choose DEK Titanium Machining Services

DEK machines Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 5 titanium from a single prototype through production volumes. There is no MOQ, so a five-piece bracket run and a multi-hundred-piece order go through the same engineer-reviewed quoting path.

Titanium runs alongside 50+ other qualified metals and plastics in the same shop, so a mixed-material assembly does not need a second vendor. For part-level DFM feedback, finish selection and assembly fit, see our custom titanium parts service, or explore 5-axis CNC machining for complex geometry.

Titanium Grades We Machine

Grade selection drives both machinability and part cost, so it is worth narrowing down before quoting your titanium part.

  • Titanium Grade 1

    Most ductile, easiest to machine

Choose it for chemical and marine equipment or formed parts. See Titanium Grade 1.

  • Titanium Grade 2

    Best corrosion resistance, unalloyed

Choose it for medical devices and desalination equipment. See Titanium Grade 2.

  • Titanium Grade 5

    Highest strength-to-weight ratio

Ti-6Al-4V for aerospace and high-load structural parts; expect more tool wear and cycle time. See Grade 5.

Titanium CNC Machining Capabilities

Titanium CNC machining at DEK covers milling, turning and the finishing steps titanium parts need before they are assembly-ready.

  • 1

    3/4/5-Axis CNC Milling

CNC milling on 3-, 4- and 5-axis machines, with ±0.01 mm profile control on 5-axis work and part size up to roughly 1000 mm.

  • 2

    CNC & Swiss Turning

CNC turning, including Swiss-type turning for slender, high-precision shafts; shaft-bore pairs hold ±0.005 mm.

  • 3

    EDM Machining

EDM machining for hardened or geometrically complex titanium features that cutting tools cannot reach cleanly.

  • 4

    Grinding & Gears

Precision grinding and gear machining for fit-critical titanium features, with ±0.003 mm on micro parts under 10 mm.

Why Titanium Is Difficult to Machine

The material behaviors our engineers manage on every titanium job, and how DEK keeps them from reaching a full batch.

  • 1

    Low Thermal Conductivity

Heat stays concentrated at the cutting edge instead of dissipating into the chip, which accelerates tool wear. DEK uses titanium-specific tooling to manage it.

  • 2

    Fast Work Hardening

Titanium work-hardens quickly once cutting forces build. Left unmanaged, the degrading tool causes dimensional drift mid-run, so feeds and speeds are tuned per grade.

  • 3

    Reactivity, Galling & Buildup

High reactivity at elevated temperatures makes galling and edge buildup more likely than with steel or aluminum, which calls for controlled cutting parameters.

  • 4

In-House CMM & SPC per Run

In-house CMM inspection with SPC data logged per run catches drift before it reaches a full batch, rather than after final inspection.

Titanium Machining FAQ

Common questions about the cost and machinability of titanium parts.

Is machining titanium expensive?
It costs more than machining aluminum or mild steel. Titanium's tool wear and slower cutting speeds add machine time, and raw stock carries a premium. The exact cost depends on grade, geometry and volume, so a quote against your actual drawing is more useful than a general estimate.
Is titanium easily machinable?
Grade 1 and Grade 2 machine reasonably well and are often chosen for that reason. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is harder to cut due to its alloying content, requiring slower speeds, rigid tooling and closer process control.
