Titanium Grade 2 — Machining Notes

  • Titanium Grade 2 in CNC Machining

Titanium Grade 2 is a commercially pure titanium with excellent corrosion resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, and biocompatibility.

This material has thermal conductivity, so the heat generated during machining stays concentrated at the cutting edge. Therefore, we use carbide or high-speed steel (HSS) tools with sharp cutting edges to minimize cutting forces and reduce heat buildup. It also tends to work harden, so we use high cutting speeds to help reduce tool wear and proper feeds to prevent excessive tool pressure. Machining small pockets in titanium can be expensive, needing specialized tools. Tools should not exceed 70% of the pocket diameter for effective cooling. Extra costs for small pockets must be considered in projects.

Titanium grade 2 allows various treatments, including anodizing, which can enhance strength by thickening the oxide layer and changing the metal’s color. Additionally, it can be easily cold-formed and has good weldability. It is particularly used in chemical processes due to its high resistance to various chemical environments, including oxidizing media, alkaline media, organic acids, compounds, aqueous salt solutions, and hot gases. Grade 2 titanium maintains corrosion resistance in diverse conditions such as liquid metals, nitric acid, mildly reducing acids, and wet chlorine or bromine gas.

  • What is Titanium Grade 2?

Titanium Grade 2 is a commercially pure titanium alloy that belongs to the commercially pure or unalloyed titanium grades. It is composed of 99.2% pure titanium, with small amounts of oxygen (0.1% maximum) and iron (0.3% maximum).

This grade of titanium has excellent corrosion resistance, especially in environments that involve saltwater, chemical exposure, and oxidizing acids. While not as strong as some other titanium alloys, Grade 2 still offers a good balance of strength and ductility. It has a tensile strength comparable to some low to medium-strength steels.

FAQ

Is Grade 2 titanium good for watches?
Yes, Grade 2 titanium is commonly used in the watch industry. It is biocompatible and has an excellent combination of strength, lightness, and corrosion resistance.
What is the difference between titanium grade 1 and 2?
Grade 1 titanium is the purest form, while Grade 2 titanium contains a small amount of oxygen. This slight alloying in Grade 2 provides enhanced strength compared to Grade 1. Both grades are corrosion-resistant and have excellent formability.
Does titanium Grade 2 rust?
No, Grade 2 titanium does not rust. Titanium is highly corrosion-resistant; Grade 2, in particular, is known for its excellent corrosion resistance.
Can Grade 2 titanium be polished?
Yes, Grade 2 titanium can be polished to achieve a smooth and lustrous finish. Titanium is known for its ability to take on a high polish. The polished surface also contributes to its corrosion resistance.
Is Grade 2 titanium magnetic?
No, Grade 2 titanium is not magnetic. Titanium, in general, is a non-ferrous metal and does not exhibit magnetic properties.
