Delrin Af 13 Ptfe Filled — Machining Notes

  • Delrin AF (13% PTFE Filled) in CNC Machining and Injection Molding

Delrin AF (13% PTFE Filled) is a type of plastic material that combines the properties of Acetal (polyoxymethylene) with the added benefit of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) filler.

Delrin is a brand name for acetal resin, and “AF” stands for “Acetal with Fillers.” The addition of “AF” indicates that the acetal material has been filled or reinforced with a certain percentage of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known by the brand name Teflon. The PTFE filler gives specific properties to the acetal material, such as improved lubricity, reduced friction, enhanced wear resistance, strength, toughness, dimensional stability, and machinability. The percentage value (in this case, 13% PTFE filled) indicates the amount of PTFE present in the composite material.

This material has low friction, excellent lubricity, and good wear resistance. Delrin AF is machined at higher speeds than unfilled acetal. We start with moderate cutting speeds and adjust based on the machining conditions to avoid excessive heat. It generally doesn’t require coolant during machining, but using an air blast or a dry-cutting process is common. PTFE provides some natural lubricity to the material.

  • What is Delrin AF (13% PTFE Filled)?

Delrin AF (13% PTFE Filled) is a specialized thermoplastic material formed by combining acetal resin (POM) with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or Teflon), with the PTFE content being 13%. This composition results in a material known for its low friction, high wear resistance, and excellent chemical resistance. It is particularly useful for moving parts requiring low friction and prolonged wear life. PTFE Filled Acetal maintains 90% of the mechanical strength of unfilled acetal homopolymer, exhibiting minimal friction and virtually no “slip-stick” behavior.

FAQ

What is the difference between Delrin and Delrin AF?
Delrin is a strong, rigid thermoplastic. Delrin AF, with 13% PTFE filler, adds lubricity and wear resistance.
Is Delrin AF (13% PTFE Filled) flammable?
Delrin AF is generally considered to be a low-flammability material. It has good fire resistance properties, and it is rated as UL 94 HB, meaning it may burn slowly with a horizontal burn rate.
Is Delrin AF (13% PTFE Filled) magnetic?
Delrin AF, like standard Delrin, is non-magnetic. PTFE (Teflon) is a non-magnetic material, and the addition of 13% PTFE filler to Delrin AF does not significantly alter its magnetic properties.
Can Delrin AF (13% PTFE Filled) conduct electricity?
Delrin AF is generally considered to be an insulating material. The presence of PTFE filler in the material does not make it electrically conductive.
