Stainless Steel A286 — Machining Notes

  • Stainless Steel A286 in CNC Machining

Stainless Steel A286 is a high-strength precipitation-hardening alloy with excellent corrosion resistance, especially at elevated temperatures.

It is an iron-chromium-nickel superalloy. With its good ductility, it is easily cold-worked and formed. We shape parts while in the solution annealed condition. We do standard machining methods and carbide inserts for optimal results. To maximize strength, we follow a process of solution treating, cold working, and aging. A286 is harder to machine than 3xx but is easier than other nickel-based PH alloys like 718.

For welding, common procedures like gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, and shielded metal arc work well. We prefer to use the same specification welding wire, but a nickel-based filler metal can also be used. We raise the weld bead and ensure the material is in the solution-annealed condition, as welding in the aged state may lead to cracking.

  • What is Stainless Steel A286?

A286 Stainless Steel is an iron-based superalloy known for high strength and corrosion resistance up to 1300 °F (704 °C) as well as suitability for lower stress applications at higher temperatures.

It’s also effective in low-temperature scenarios, remaining ductile and non-magnetic down to -320 °F (-196 °C). The alloy’s hardness doesn’t hinder its ability to be cold drawn and formed. Its chemical properties include a carbon content of 0.080 max, a chromium range of 13.50-16.00, and other elements

FAQ

How do you heat treat A286 stainless steel?
First, heat to 1800°F (982°C), hold for 1 hour, then cool rapidly. Second, heat to 1650°F (899°C), hold for 2 hours, then cool rapidly. The first method boosts rupture strength after aging, while the second enhances ductility and hardness.
Is A286 weldable?
Yes, A286 is weldable using conventional welding methods. Follow proper welding procedures to maintain its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
Is A286 stainless steel better than 316?
A286 stainless steel offers higher strength and temperature resistance than 316 stainless steel. Although tougher to work with than 316, A286 can be cold-worked successfully.
What is A286 similar to?
A286 is similar to other high-temperature, corrosion-resistant alloys like Inconel 718 and Waspaloy. Alloy A286's machinability is like austenitic stainless steel, especially Stainless Steel Type 310.
