Stainless Steel 2205 Duplex — Machining Notes

  • Stainless Steel 2205 Duplex in CNC Machining

Stainless Steel 2205 Duplex is a corrosion-resistant alloy made up of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and manganese.

It is a type of stainless steel known for having a dual-phase structure composed of roughly equal parts of austenite (face-centered cubic lattice) and ferrite (body-centered cubic lattice). Its composition gives excellent corrosion resistance. In CNC machining, this alloy showcases good machinability. With higher strength than traditional stainless steel, it is used in the oil and gas industry, chemical processing, and marine engineering. When machining, we use carbide tools and maintain proper cooling for efficient processing and prolonged tool life.

Heat treatment is generally unnecessary when post-machining this alloy, but specific applications might require annealing. This alloy is easy to weld, allowing for flexible design and construction. Stainless Steel 2205 Duplex’s good thermal performance and acceptable electrical properties enhance its adaptability. Though not suitable for anodizing, we have other post-processing options, like hardening for customized applications. We always adhere to guidelines ensuring optimal results in CNC machining with Stainless Steel 2205 Duplex.

  • What is Stainless Steel 2205 Duplex?

Stainless Steel 2205 Duplex is a duplex stainless steel alloy with a composition of about 22% chromium, 5-6% nickel, 3% molybdenum, and a balance of iron.

The term “duplex” refers to its dual-phase microstructure, combining both austenitic (chromium-nickel) and ferritic (chromium-manganese) phases. This combination provides excellent corrosion resistance, that is why it can be used in harsh conditions like chemical processing and marine environments.

FAQ

How to weld 2205 duplex stainless steel?
Welding 2205 duplex stainless steel requires proper preheating, maintaining interpass temperatures, and using suitable filler materials like ER2209. Use duplex-compatible welding techniques, such as GTAW (TIG) or GMAW (MIG), for optimal results.
Can you weld 2205 to 316L?
AWS ER 309L welding wire is suitable for welding 2205 duplex stainless steel to austenitic stainless steel 316L using the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process.
What is the disadvantage of duplex steel?
They are not recommended for applications below -50°C because of reduced impact toughness at very low temperatures. Also, usage above 250°C is restricted due to the risk of harmful intermetallic phase formation during prolonged exposure. Additionally, it may be more challenging to form and machine compared to austenitic stainless steel.
Does duplex 2205 rust?
Duplex 2205 has excellent corrosion resistance, but it is not completely immune to rust. Prolonged exposure to aggressive environments may lead to surface rusting.
