CNC Machining Aluminum 2024
Aluminum 2024 is a widely used alloy known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and is popular in aerospace applications.
It offers advantages such as machinability, heat treatability, and light weight. It has high tensile strength and can be heat-treated to enhance its mechanical properties further. Despite its benefits, there are considerations when machining aluminum 2024. It is less weldable than other aluminum alloys, and welding can impact its strength. The alloy tends to work harden, becoming harder and stronger during cold work, which can pose challenges during machining. Selecting the right cutting tools, such as carbide tools, is important due to the potential for work hardening. Proper chip control is also important to avoid issues like built-up edges. Adequate cooling prevents overheating during machining, ensuring better surface finishes and extended tool life.
The mechanical properties of aluminum alloy 2024 depend on its temper. In the natural state (2024-O temper), it has an ultimate tensile strength of 140–210 MPa, a maximum yield strength of 97 MPa, and an elongation of 10–25%. The T3 temper enhances strength, with 400–430 MPa ultimate tensile strength, 270–280 MPa yield strength, and 10–15% elongation. T4 involves solution treatment, T5 includes cooling and artificial aging, and T351 improves plate properties with 470 MPa ultimate tensile strength, 280 MPa yield strength, and 20% elongation. These tempering processes tailor the alloy for specific applications, optimizing its mechanical performance.
