What is Tack Welding?

Types of Tack Welding

Standard Tack Weld

Standard tack weld is opted when support is required for the final weld. It is a large weld which manages the weight of materials so that they do not break.

Moreover, careful consideration is needed because if the weld ends up being too large, the final weld won't work perfectly.

Bridge Tack Weld

When materials fit with one another and there is some gap left in between, the welders use bridge tack weld.

This gap is left behind due to cutting mistakes and hence small tacks can be applied to reduce the gap between the pieces.

Thermit Tack

Thermit tack consists of mixing the aluminum powder, magnesium metal and iron oxide powder together so that a hot reaction is produced.

This chemical reaction produces heat that helps in joining metals which are delicate and ensures a precise joint.

Hot Tacking

The hot tacking process allows adding some filler to the space between metal components. The main purpose of this type of weld is to bridge the gap between metal pieces.

In this process, a sledgehammer is used to hit the metal parts so that they can be aligned into place after a weld.

Ultrasonic Tack

Ultrasonic tack helps in creating a tack with the help of a welding machine which may be either electric based or gas based.

4 Forms of Tack Welds

Four main forms of tack welding are as follows:

  • Square form is a type of tack welding form that creates tack welds in a pattern that looks like a square, and it is a strong weld. It is suitable when metal parts are joined at right angles.
  • Vertical form consists of creating a tack between two pieces of metal, which is applied vertically.
  • The right angle is a type of tack that allows the welding of two metal pieces in a perpendicular form.
  • When joining two metal pieces which are perpendicular and creating a t-shape then right angle corner tack is opted where welder creates a weld on 90 degree point to join the pieces.

Tips to Ensure High-Quality Tack Welds

In order to ensure the achievement of high-quality tack welds, some tips are given below.

  • Test the metal piece to ensure its welding quality. It allows you to assess how much of the filler wire is needed for the process of welding. You can test on a scrap piece so that waste is avoided.
  • In case contaminants are present on the filler wire, make sure to clean it so that no dust and oil are present, as it may impact the welding quality.
  • Make sure to use tape so that you can hold the metal parts in place while welding so that alignment issues do not persist.
  • These are temporary welds and cannot hold the entire piece together. Hence, you should study the area properly and analyze where it would be most effective.
  • In order to control distortion, you must determine the direction and sequence of the welds so that deformation is avoided.
  • Metal must get the right amount of heat on both sides so that melting and warping are avoided.
  • Make sure to keep the metal pieces in a stationary position before they cool down properly so that they do not break off.

Materials Used in Tack Welding

Materials for tack welding should be chosen based on some factors like thickness and type. For instance, when materials are thin they have low melting point and they are challenging to tack weld.

Usually the common materials opted for tack welding include aluminum, rame, brass, stainless steel, cast iron, magnesium and titanium.
