What is Magnesium?

Magnésio, discovered in 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy, is known through compounds like Epsom salts, magnesia, and magnesite. The name comes from Magnesia in Greece, where magnesia alba was first found. It is the eighth most abundant element in Earth’s crust and a common structural metal after aluminum and iron. Magnesium is found in carbonates and silicates, as well as in minerals like talc and olivine. It is commercially produced through the electrolysis of molten magnesium chloride or by directly reducing its compounds.

Magnesium burns with a bright light, making it historically used in photography and still employed in pyrotechnic devices. It has similar thermal and electrical conductivity to aluminum. Magnesium is resistant to alkalies, but when magnesium comes into contact with acids, it reacts with them, releasing hydrogen gas and other chemical changes in the magnesium material. Magnesium forms a protective oxide layer in air and water but reacts with steam. It acts as a powerful reducing agent to produce other metals like titanium and zirconium and reacts directly with many elements.
